Threads of Memories started in 1987 when two friends shared a passion for antiques and alterations. After noticing much of the market for antiques was being delivered out of state, the two women crafted a plan to keep antiques local, while also providing a storefront shop for alterations.
The plan needed a name. While flipping through pages in a magazine, the word threads in the headline jumped off the page and an idea starting brewing. In a creative effort to combine alterations (threads) with antiques (memories), the official name of the business was created, Threads of Memories, Inc.
It didn't take long for the antique side of the business to out pass alterations, but the name stuck (and honestly still applies even without alterations) and we haven't looked back since!
Threads of Memories was the first antique mall (to offer space for other vendors) of its kind to open in Brookings, South Dakota. It was also the first shop in downtown Brookings to sell coffee by the bag. Back then, the coffee was shipped in and sold to customers. Nowadays, we offer free samples of locally roasted Kool Beans Coffee.
In 2024, Threads of Memories moved out of downtown Brookings to its new location on 8th Street South. This is the fourth location of the business since 1987.
Threads of Memories is the main vendor in this antique mall. You'll find our merchandise throughout the entire store labeled with a green "1" tag. In addition, we have 16 other vendors offering everything from costume jewelry, coins, vintage clothing, books and comics, antiques, collectibles, and toys.
